Land Use and Transportation Studies

Understanding the nature of future land use responses to urban processes along with resulting trip patterns is an important input to the demand forecasting process. Sydney is fortunate to have available government prepared land use forecasts and associated strategic-level trip tables. However to use these effectively it is necessary to have knowledge of how land use has developed historically, and how forecast trends have changed in response to various pressures.

This requires a grasp of implications of different policy tools, and of economic and social trends, including:

  • trends in economic structure and employment markets,
  • general economic policy settings, including trade and investment policy,
  • strategic planning processes and government stances in relation to these,
  • strategic transport policy, and how it might fit with land use policy,
  • land development processes,
  • emerging issues in land release strategies,
  • demographics,
  • infrastructure ownership arrangements and associated business decisions.

Halcrow MWT provides detailed analysis and commentary on official land use forecasts and associated travel demand forecasts. While this is generally undertaken as an input to our in-house modelling work, it can also be provided as a stand alone service.
