Prior to opening of the M5 East Motorway a deficiency in the road network was identified in the vicinity of the M5 East – General Holmes Drive merge near the airport tunnel.
PARAMICS microsimulation was used to determine the extent of the problem and to develop appropriate solutions. A tidal flow scheme was developed for the Airport Tunnel that involved a northbound lane of traffic travelling contra-flow through the southbound tunnel.
The tidal flow scheme was implemented and is successfully in operation today.
